The "Coop de Ville", Homesteading For Hot Rodders and Chickens

There is a link between hot-rodders and home-steaders. Perhaps the do-it-yourself attitudes. Maybe the deep anti-establishment roots of the movements. Probably just because we all dig good tools and need a reason to use them.

We cut the car show season short this year to start the wife's new project/hobby/life style. She has upped the ante on her home-steading madness by adding chickens to our lives. This required a coop. Or a "Coop de Ville" as we've christened it.

This is where real life runs parallel to hot rodding at the Real Life; Hot Rods garage. Besides chicks dig it. See what I did there?
The Coup de Ville was made primarily from salvaged material stored in the shed of one million wonders. I had to buy the outside plywood, roofing materials and miscellaneous hardware but the rest is made of used junk and Monster Energy drinks.
The floor was assembled deck style with 2 x 6 then covered with plywood. Walls and trusses are all framed from 2 x 6. Asphalt shingles and outdoor plywood siding wrap up the exterior. The front porch was added because I had the spindles left over from an old stair railing. The inside was insulated with foam and fiberglass and then paneled with more outdoor plywood. Remnant linoleum adds a little class to the floor.
The run was pieced together from some industrial wire shelving and an old gate. So far the chickens and mama seem happy with the arrangement and that's what matters. As long as mama is happy maybe she won't look at the receipts for my next order for Volkswagen parts.
Fall is here! Get out in the garage, or the yard, or whatever. Build something!
Anyone else got fall projects going? Let's see them. forward pics and descriptions to Real Life: Hot Rods.
